Worship and Music

Music Ministry

Praise ye the Lord, Praise God in his sanctuary....
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet:
Praise him with the psaltary and harp.
Praise him with the timbrel and dance:
Praise him with stringed instruments and organs.....
Praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord.
Praise ye the Lord!

(Psalm 150)

The Music Ministry at Saint Matthew’s engages people of all ages. It encompasses the Adult Choir, Children’s Choir and the Arise Music Team. Music enhances the theme of our worship services and enables many to feel the presence of God. We praise and glorify God through the gift of music.

We have two choirs, the Adult Choir and the Children’s Choir. The Adult Choir, with organ, leads the music at the Traditional Service, singing a broad repertoire of music from the earliest styles and traditions to newly published anthems. The Children’s Choir, first through sixth grades, learn basic skills in voice, music reading, percussion instruments including Orff, handchimes, liturgy, hymns and anthems. They sing once a month at the Traditional Service.

In addition to our regular music, our worship is frequently enriched by guest musicians on a variety of instruments and on occasion, the Cherub Choir, Handchime Ringers, Teen singers, especially at the advent service of Lessons and Carols and all the major Holy days.

The Saint Matthew’s Church Choirs truly love to sing together and help lead the congregation in singing. Participating in choir has created strong bonds of friendship as members work together to blend their voices in praise of God.

Anyone interested in taking advantage of these music opportunities provided by the Adult or Children’s Choir at Saint Matthew’s is encouraged to do so and should speak to Carol Farley, Choir Director or Terry Farley, Organist.

Arise Music Team

The Arise music team provides support and leadership for the Contemporary Eucharistic service. They also play for special events in the parish as needed. Membership is by invitation and audition.

The Arise team has been blessed with the opportunity to play and sing with international worship leader Robin Mark for four years. The band has recorded a CD of frequently played songs and music from the contemporary service.

Altar Guild

The altar guild is a group of women and men called to serve God by preparing and tending the places where His people come to worship. It is a ministry of time and many talents undertaken in the name of Jesus. Our work goes on quietly behind the scenes. This ministry often goes unnoticed as long as the setting for worship is the familiar one the congregation sees each week. In addition to preparing the sanctuary for all types of services as directed by the clergy, the altar guild also cares for all the vestments, the vessels and the paraments. We are further charged with obtaining the altar flowers as well as for their use in the flower ministry. The most exciting part of our ministry, is preparing for all of the “special” services, the baptisms, the weddings, and also the funerals . We also decorate the church, inside and out, for the celebratory seasons of Christmas and Easter. While this is primarily our work, we like to include the congregation in this wonderful activity.
