Youth Education

Youth Missioners and Hosts at the Pine Ridge Reservation in 2010

Saint Matthew’s Youth Ministries are open to all girls and boys, young women and men, from the time they are ‘rising 6th graders’ through their graduation from High School. We also welcome interested adults, whether or not they are parents, to join our Youth Ministry Team!

There are two main aspects to the way Youth are being formed for Christian discipleship: Sunday Morning Worship and ‘Sunday School’ classes and Evening, Youth Group activities. All youth programs are led by committed, and faithful adult leaders—in consultation with parish clergy.

Sunday Mornings

All Youth are encouraged to attend one of the Services of Holy Eucharist offered every Sunday morning: at 7:45, 9:00, or 10:30 a.m. Sunday School classes are presented during the 9:00 a.m. Worship hour according to the following groupings:

  • 6th & 7th Graders
  • 8th & 9th Graders
  • 10th, 11th, & 12th Graders

All classes are ‘team taught’, i.e., by one or more adult leaders, and the curriculum is varied and relevant to their lives as Jesus’ disciples—ranging from the Sacraments and the Gospels, to living the Christian life in light of these principles.

Newcomers are always welcome, to join in at any point! And all youth are encouraged to ‘bring a friend.’ It’s Not Just For Us!

Youth Class will start up again on September 11, 2011.

Evening Programs

Youth Group for all youth (grades 6th-12th) usually meets from 6:00–8:00 p.m.

February 19 - We will be playing laser tag.  We will meet at Philadelphia Sports Club, 1 Highpoint Drive, Chalfont (formerly High Point) at 4:30 p.m. so we can assemble and get briefed before the game.  We will play from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.  Pick up will be at 6:15 p.m.  The cost is $7 per person if you are playing.  There is a game room if you do not want to play.  Friends are welcome and please be sure to let Erin know if you plan to attend so she can have an idea of a head count.  We will not be having dinner.

Service Opportunities

A core part of growing in Christ is the opportunity for all youth to serve others. Saint Matthew’s provides that opportunity to all youth.

SUMMER MISSION TRIPS
: Rising 9th graders through High Schoolers are invited to ‘be on mission’ with their adult chaperones during the yearly Summer Mission Trip that they inspire, organize, and raise funds for. Destinations have included places near (e.g., Washington D.C., New York City, Philadelphia) and far (e.g., Alaska, West Virginia, South Dakota), but always ‘outside the comfort zone.’

SERVICE CAMP
: Middle Schoolers are invited to join in the week-long SUMMER SERVICE CAMP, held on-site. For a week every summer these youth provide invaluable service to the adults and children attending Vacation Bible School and their afternoons are spent in service to the local community, e.g. Hope Gardens in Ambler; Manna on Main Street in Lansdale; or with the Interfaith Hospitality Alliance.

In addition to their youth-specific ministries, youth are engaged, active participants in many more aspects of the wider, Saint Matthew’s Community. Many interests and talents are represented!

Here is just a sampling:

Worship
Youth are welcome to participate as acolytes (altar servers), readers, and leaders of The Prayers. Some of the highlights during the Church Year for youth are the Advent Lessons and Carols and Dramatic Reading of the Passion on Palm Sunday.

Music
For youth who sing or play an instrument, singing with or accompanying one of the Choirs is open to all.

Hospitality
Youth who like to ‘meet and greet’ or pour out coffee or lemonade can step up to assist the adults who are ushers, greeters, or Coffee Hour hosts.

Parish life
Aspiring waiters and waitresses can volunteer to ‘wait tables’ at the yearly Shrove Tuesday pancake Supper or the Ladies Group Holiday Craft Bazaar.
